CLÍNIC BARCELONA
Learning About Periods

BACKGROUND
Clínic Barcelona, led by gynaecologist Dr. Francisco Carmona, is one of the world’s leading centers for endometriosis research. Public awareness of the condition is still low, and the clinic’s team has been tackling that gap on multiple fronts — including direct education, teaching teenagers the basics of menstruation before they can understand endometriosis at all.

CHALLENGE
The clinic’s existing teaching materials were built by doctors, for doctors: X-rays, dissection photos, clinical graphs, and medical terminology. Accurate, but unreadable for a 12–16 year-old audience — and unlikely to travel home and start a conversation with a parent or sibling.

IDEA
Rather than simplify the science, we kept all of it and rebuilt how it was shown. Every diagram — the reproductive system, follicle development, the hormone cycle, sanitary products — was redrawn in one consistent illustrated style, so the material reads as a single story instead of a stack of borrowed slides. The narrative moves from macro to micro: starting with the body as a whole, then descending into the ovary, the follicle, the egg.

The hardest part of that story is also its center: the pituitary gland, the ovaries, and the uterus running four systems in parallel — hormones, follicle stage, endometrium, body temperature — in sync, every 28 days. A static chart can show that, but it can’t show the timing. So we built an animated diagram that plays the whole cycle in motion: a shared timeline drives the hormone curves, the endometrium, and the ovarian stage together, with the corresponding organ or hormone icon animating alongside it. It’s the one piece of the deck that couldn’t have been a slide.

Old myths (impurity taboos, “don’t touch the plants,” “don’t cook”) are addressed head-on and answered factually, next to practical, current information — pad and cup absorbency, pain scales, product choice — pitched so a teenager could explain any of it to their family that same evening.

RESULT
The materials are now in active use in Clínic Barcelona’s teenage education program and were well received by the client.
